Health of School-aged Children
A course organised by the Centre for Paediatric Epidemiology and Biostatistics, UCL Institute of Child Health
This five-day course will be relevant to doctors and nurses working with school age children and to a range of other health and social care professionals involved with this age group.
Developed with reference to the Healthy Child Programme: from 5-19 years old (Department of Health 2009), topics covered include:
• An overview of the health of school aged children; epidemiology of common
causes of morbidity and mortality in school aged children and adolescents
• The policy context for services for children, young people and their families
• Health inequalities
• Healthy schools
• Health needs assessment and screening
• Promoting healthy weight and activity
• Emotional health, psychological wellbeing and mental health in the school
setting
• Adolescent mental health
• Working and communicating effectively with adolescents
• Health promotion
• Specific issues such as reproductive health and teenage pregnancy, self harm, substance use and misuse, healthy weight and exercise and interventions for prevention and management
• The role of school health services
• Addressing the needs of children, young people and families with additional
needs
• Provision of effective young people friendly services
• Supporting parents.
The module can be taken on its own, either as an assessed qualification or, on a non-assessed basis, to support continuing professional development. The assessed module carries 15 credits which can be used to build to a UCL ICH MSc in Community Child Health.
Participants may also attend single days.
